Say the obvious part first. North Carolina Registered Agent.co published this, charges $99 a year for the service it is recommending, and earns money if you switch. • Every renewal after that: $199

Neither figure is hidden and neither is a trick. The mistake happens in the comparison, not in the disclosure. Shoppers weigh an introductory rate against other companies' standing rates and reach a conclusion the arithmetic does not support. Over five years the standalone path runs $895 before state fees. Ours runs $495 across the same stretch.

The Job Being Priced Is Fixed

North Carolina wrote its agent rules into Chapter 55D of the General Statutes and applied them to every entity type at the same time. LLCs, corporations, nonprofits, partnerships, one framework. The duty inside it does not scale with the invoice:

• Hold a physical street address in North Carolina, attended during business hours
• Accept service of process and official mail delivered there
• Get it to the company

A $199 agent owes that. A $99 agent owes exactly that. Nothing extra attaches to the more expensive appointment.

And the reason the job matters is worth stating plainly, because North Carolina's enforcement is unusually quiet. Skip the April 15 annual report and no penalty invoice arrives; the statute imposes no late fee. Instead a notice of grounds for administrative dissolution goes into the mail, and sixty days after it is sent, § 57D-6-06 lets the state dissolve your LLC. The warning is a single envelope, handed to whoever holds your registered office. What you are really buying is the certainty that the envelope gets opened and read to you.
