The Notice That Starts a Sixty Day Countdown Arrives by Mail

A sales page wrote this. Specifically, North Carolina Registered Agent.co, which charges $99 a year for registered agent service and wants the line item currently going to Rocket Lawyer. Read the reasoning knowing that. The Rocket Lawyer figure below is theirs, taken from published pricing in a July 2026 check, and we have not touched it.

The Pricing Is Honest

$125 for a year of agent service, and the figure does not move whichever membership level you hold. No introductory rate that climbs at renewal. In a business where teaser pricing sits close to standard practice, a number that behaves identically at every tier deserves the compliment.

The membership around it is also a real product. Document templates, e-signature, business forms, attorney consultations. An owner who draws up agreements regularly is getting genuine use out of that, and for them the agent service is a sensible thing to have folded in.

A Scope Problem, Not an Integrity One

The thing on sale is a legal platform that carries an agent seat inside it. If you bought the platform on purpose, nothing here is a criticism. If your only requirement is a lawful North Carolina address where court papers can be delivered, then part of that $125 is paying for a shelf of tools you are not reaching for.

The test takes a minute. Look back over the past year and count the documents you generated and the attorney calls you booked. Zero is a common answer, and zero means you are paying subscription rates for a mailbox function.

What North Carolina Asks For

Under § 55D-30 every registered entity in this state has to keep a registered agent and a registered office here, continuously, at a physical street address. Business hours attendance. Accept what arrives, pass it on. That is the specification in full.

Nothing in it mentions document libraries or legal advice. The statute does not care whether your agent has a software platform. It cares whether somebody is behind the door.

Why the Door Is Worth Paying Attention To

North Carolina enforces quietly, which is exactly what makes the mail handling matter.

Miss the April 15 annual report and no penalty bill shows up, because the state does not impose a late fee. What happens instead is that an administrative dissolution notice goes out from the Secretary of State. Sixty days from that mailing, the company can be struck off.

Read that sequence again as a buyer. A $200 annual obligation whose failure mode begins with one envelope, delivered to whoever holds your registered office. The service that gets that envelope opened, scanned, and in front of you the day it arrives is doing something a document template cannot.

The only trap is order. A Rocket Lawyer membership and a North Carolina entity record are unconnected systems, and cancelling the first does nothing to the second. Until the form is processed, Rocket Lawyer remains your agent on the record and remains where your summonses and your state notices get delivered. Name the replacement, file, confirm the record has changed, then cancel the membership. That way the seat is filled every single day, which is what the statute above requires.
